  1. Zane B. Says:

For the bath, Janet Frame used war connotations, this is referring to the war with herself where her mind is still able but her body is slowly shutting down and she has less control. “they are the enemy now,” referring how her body is waging a war against her, fighting against her will and not doing what she wants it to. She used the metaphor “now more like the edge of a cliff.” This quote is referring to the edge of the bath, and how it’s really hard to get into it because her body is too hard to control. Makes me feel sorry for her because it’s hard for her when it’s easy for us. Even the simplist things become major chores.

It says ‘the bath homework’ so i’m not sure if we had to speak about winter garden, oh well

In The Bath a technqiue that was used to make me feel sympathetic about the old lady was Simile. This is because of the quote “now more like the edge of a cliff”(thanks Zane) and what it represents. Yes anyone can see the a bath is is a little ridge to climb over, but not for everyone. Most of the elderly generation are not as fit and young as they were. This makes everyday tasks like getting out of the bath trickier with everyday that passes. This made me fell sympathetic towards not just the old lady but elderly people in general because they do see bath tubs as huges cliffs into the water, they have to get it and out without help. which i think is really unfair. Also i feel sorry for them because no one seems to care about them that is way these probelms that are to usant hills become mountians for them.

    Iron Man OUT!

It is good to see that you are connecting the text with ‘our world.’ 🙂 When you use a quote try and weave it into your writing rather than just stating it. For example, The old woman views the bath as the edge of a cliff”

  3. Michelle Says:

The short story “The Bath” made me feel sympathetic towards the old lady because she couldnt get out of the bath. Techniques that made me feel this way were war connotations. “They are the enemy now” refers to her body, this makes me feel sad for the character because she is lossing control of her body. She also refers to the bath as a cliff, “now more like the edge of a cliff” shows that she struggles to get out of the bath.
